Black Mouth Chinook

While most Chinook migrate out to the Pacific Ocean to grow large before returning to rivers to spawn, Blackmouth are the “homebodies.” They are immature Chinook that choose to remain in the inland waters of the Puget Sound year-round. Because they are younger and haven’t hit their final growth spurt in the open ocean, they are typically smaller (6–15 lbs) but are prized for their incredibly high oil content and firm, delicious meat.

5 Traits to Identify a Blackmouth Chinook

  1. The “Black Mouth”: Look for a distinct black or dark grey pigment along the gum line of the lower jaw.

  2. Size: They are generally smaller than their migratory “King” cousins, usually ranging from 5 to 15 pounds.

  3. Silver Sheen: Because they haven’t begun the spawning process, they maintain a bright, chrome-silver “ocean-bright” appearance.

  4. Spotting: Look for small, irregular black spots across the entire tail and the back.

  5. Small Scales: Their scales are often “loose” and easily rubbed off, a sign of a fish still in its saltwater feeding phase.

Timing and Tactics in the Puget Sound

When to find them:

While adult Chinook runs peak in the summer and fall (July–September), Blackmouth are the stars of the winter and spring seasons. Traditionally, the best “Blackmouth” fishing happens from October through April, providing a world-class fishery when most other salmon seasons are closed.

How to fish for them:

  • Downrigger Trolling: This is the gold standard. Blackmouth stay near the bottom where the baitfish (herring and sand lances) hide. You’ll want to keep your gear within 5–10 feet of the deck.

  • Gear: Use 11-inch flashers paired with “hoochies” (plastic squid), small spoons, or plug-cut herring.

  • Location: Look for “tide rips” and underwater structures like points and banks where bait aggregates.
