It didn’t take long for this father and son and the grand kid’s to get there limits of Puget Sound resident Coho Salmon. Coho Salmon are known as the aerial fighters because after getting hooked they tend to head towards the surface making multiple jumps and runs trying to unbutton the hook. Their bigger cousin the Chinook are just the opposite and will tend to head towards the bottom and but on a tug-of-war with the fishermen.

These Coho are in there rapid growth stage and are feeding aggressively, growing about a half of an inch each week. Feeding on shrimp and krill they need to eat all day to fill up. This makes them very aggressive at taking the bait, there is no doubt when you hook one of these amazing fish.

In mid-July through August they will transition to feeding on larger hearing and their flavor profile will change. Don’t get me wrong a Coho Salmon is always delicious but there is a subtle change in taste between a fish feeding on small shrimp and krill compared to feeding on herring.

In my opinion, right now these Coho are the best tasting salmon you will ever eat.
Beautiful dark red meat full of fat and delicious. They are great on the grill, baked, smoked, etc. Look for recipes on our website as we’ll be adding them soon.

Most of the Coho we have been hooking are just out of Edmonds Washington ion the calm waters of Puget Sound. Fishing is great off Shilshole near Seattle and Edmonds and that’s where we are concentrating our time and attention.

We are anticipating that fishing for Coho will continue to be excellent well into August. Mornings tend to be the most popular time to go out but we pick up fish all day long.

Give us a call and book your trip, we have some weekend dates still available along with week day excursions. Many of our clients will book a trip in the afternoon so they can get in a fishing trip after they get off of work.

Look forward to fishing with you all soon. …. Captain Chris Hoag
